What are Lufthansa’s Baggage Allowance Limits and Fees?

Lufthansa Hand Luggage Size

The dimensions for carry-on baggage are set at 55 x 40 x 20 cm. Shown below are the cabin bag weight allowance for Lufthansa Airways depending on ticket class:

  • Economy: 1 x 8 kg
  • Premium Economy: 1 x 8 kg
  • Business: 2 x 8 kg
  • First Class: 2 x 8 kg

Note that if you plan to bring any liquids into the cabin, you can do so as long as they are stored in containers no bigger than 100ml and are carried in a clear, re-sealable plastic bags with maximum dimensions of 20 x 20cm. Each passenger can carry a maximum of 1000ml (e.g. 10 x 100ml).

Lufthansa Checked Luggage Size

Below are the included checked luggage allowance depending on ticket class:

  • Economy: 1 x 23 kg
  • Premium Economy: 1 x 32 kg
  • Business: 2 x 23 kg
  • First Class2 x 32 kg

Any additional checked in baggage items will incur excess baggage fees.

For all tickets a maximum travel weight of 32 kg per item of baggage applies.

Excess Baggage

In Economy Class, a flat rate of €50 will be charged for each additional item of luggage on European routes.

Sports Equipment and Special Luggage

If you’re taking sports equipment with you, you’ll need to call the airline at least 24 hours before you travel.  The number to dial is +49 (0)69 – 86 799 799.

Note that if any item exceeds the 32kg weight limitation, it will need to be sent as cargo at cargo transport rates.

Musical instruments maybe taken into the cabin if they do not exceed cabin baggage weight and dimension specifications. Larger instruments such as double-bass, violone, viola da Gamba which weigh more than 32 kg may only be taken on Lufthansa flights after registration and approval.

Delayed, Missing or Damaged Luggage

Should you discover that your checked luggage has been delayed or damaged, you will need to report this to the Lufthansa baggage tracing desk at the airport or to the Lufthansa airport ticket team so that an official report can be filed. You will then receive a written confirmation with a reference number.

You can also report it online here. If you do not notice the damage until you are at home or in a hotel, be sure to report it in writing within the legally prescribed period of seven days after your flight. You must also produce evidence that the damage occurred while the bag was in the care of the airline. For items that are delayed or missing, you can use your tracking reference number to trace your baggage online here.

Lufthansa Airline Compensation

In international and German domestic travel, the liability for damage, destruction, loss or partial loss and for late delivery of baggage is limited to a cumulative 1,131 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per journey and traveller (approximately €1,213).

Mobile Boarding Passes

When booking a flight with Lufthansa, eligible passengers can check-in online from 23 hours ahead of departure here.

By checking in online from your smartphone, you’ll be offered the option to use mobile boarding passes on selected routes – avoiding the need to print.

If you don’t use your smartphone to check in, you’ll be provided with boarding passes that you must print and take to the airport. If you have already received your boarding pass on your mobile phone, online or from a check-in counter, you can check in your bags at one of the self-service baggage check-in kiosks.

Priority Boarding

Business Class passengers, HON Circle Members, Senators and Star Gold card holders have priority boarding available to them on all European flights.

Flying With Children

Children aged up to 2 years, are not required to have their own seat.

Passengers intending to fly with an infant must inform Lufthansa if they will be traveling with an infant on their lap. Other than domestic German routes where infants fly free of charge, 10% of the applicable adult fare must be paid for the infant.

Only one infant under 2 years is permitted to be seated on an adult’s lap in flight but if you have a second child under two with you, you have the option of booking a seat and taking an appropriate child restraint system such as a baby car seat or child seat.

Children under the age of 2 are entitled to one piece of baggage weighing up to 23 kg under the free baggage allowance.

Baby changing units can be found in the washrooms on board and spare nappies are also kept on board. Toys, colouring books, puzzles, etc. are also provided to children on all routes.

The in-flight entertainment program also contains content suitable for children such as films, music and games.

 

Pushchairs and Strollers

Passengers can keep their buggy or stroller with them until just before boarding and have it handed back immediately after landing.

Pushchairs and strollers to not count toward a passengers checked luggage allowance.

Seating for Babies and Children

Children who turn two years of age before or during the trip require their own seat. In this case, the child fare will be charged for the entire trip.

On long-haul flights, special baby cots are available. The bassinets are suited for babies up to 14kg in weight and up to 83 cm in length. The number of bassinets on board is limited however, so you should reserve a cot up to 48 hours before flight departure on +49 (0)69-86 799 799.

Note that a seat reservation fee for the seat with a bassinet may apply depending on your ticket condition.

Unaccompanied Children

Children aged between 5 and 11 years may only fly unaccompanied if they are using the Unaccompanied Minor service or if they are travelling with someone who is at least 12 years old.

Children aged from 12 up to a maximum of 17 years old travelling alone can also be looked after at the request of their parents. In addition to the price of the flight, there is a special service charge per route for unaccompanied children:

  • €50 for Flights within Germany or Europe.
  • €80 for intercontinental flight routes.

Tickets for unaccompanied children cannot be booked online; they can only be booked through the Lufthansa Service Centre, your travel agency or at the Lufthansa ticket desk at the airport.

Flying While Pregnant

Expectant mothers with complication-free pregnancies can fly with Lufthansa until the end of the 36th week of pregnancy or up to four weeks before their expected due date without a medical certificate from a doctor. However, the airline recommends that expectant mothers beyond the 28th week of their pregnancies carry a current letter from a doctor (available here) which includes the following:

  • The doctor should expressly state that the patient’s pregnancy does not prevent her from flying.
  • Confirmation that the pregnancy is progressing without complications.
  • The expected due date.

Lufthansa does not offer any special fares specifically for seniors.

In your request, you will need to give the following information:

  • Name of the person to be contacted.
  • A daytime telephone number.
  • Number of passengers (including children)
  • Flight dates.
  • Destination.

Travelling With Wheelchairs

Lufthansa will provide you with a wheelchair free of charge if you require a wheelchair at your departure and/or destination airport. Please make sure you inform the airline 48 hours ahead of your departure or preferably at the time of your booking.

It is also free to take your own foldable wheelchair with you. Your wheelchair will be carried in the cargo hold. You will need to know the dimensions and weight as well as any specifics (foldable/non-foldable) of your chair to ensure it can be transported.

Flying With Guide Dogs

You have the option of taking a guide dog or other assistance dog with you free of charge.

If you have booked a flight to/from the USA, there is also the option of transporting an ESAN dog (emotional support animal) in the aircraft cabin free of charge. You will require confirmation from your doctor that you require an assistance dog.

Note that as some countries have special regulations regarding the entry of animals, it is important to take appropriate application measures in advance of departure.

Pets

Lufthansa will transport animals either in the passenger cabin or in the aircraft’s cargo hold, depending on the animal’s weight and size.

Before booking your flight, you will need to determine the import and export regulations for animals in your desired destination country as well as any relevant animal welfare provisions.

If your animal is being transported in the cargo hold, it must be at the airport well before departure. In Frankfurt, passengers should be at the airport with their animals at least 90 minutes before departure.

Note that a dog or cat may be transported in the cabin in their if carrier box is watertight, bite proof and does not exceed the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm. The maximum weight of the animal plus the box should not exceed 8 kg.

Booking Fees

Customers who make a reservation through lufthansa.com may cancel their reservation without penalty up to 24 hours after the reservation is made, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight’s departure.

Lufthansa will allow customers to hold a reservation made directly with Lufthansa’s telephone reservation center without payment for up to 24 hours, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight’s departure.

  • Online (lufthansa.com): No fee
  • Online (lufthansa.com) for flights originating outside the U.S: €15 fee
  • Via phone (Lufthansa Call Center): €20 ticket service fee
  • At the airport: €20 ticket service fee

Travel Insurance

Lufthansa offers a range of travel insurance products via AIG Travel, including:

  • Flight cancellation
  • Trip curtailment
  • Break of journey
  • Missed departure
  • Delayed flight

Flight Change Fees

Flight bookings can be changed provided the fare conditions of your ticket permit this. If necessary, Lufthansa bookings can be changed up to one hour before departure online or via a mobile device under My Bookings.

A change of route is sometimes also possible under specific fare conditions. If you change your flight route, there may be a difference in price between the ticket you have already booked and the new fare, which will then be charged in addition to any possible change of booking fee. All fees are stipulated in your ticket conditions.

Flight Cancellation Policy

If the airline cancels a flight, fails to operate a flight reasonably according to the schedule or fails to stop at your destination you can:

  • Take the next scheduled service on which space is available without additional charge and, where necessary, extend the validity of your ticket; or
  • Within a reasonable period of time, fly to the destination shown on your ticket using the airline’s own services or those of another carrier, or by other mutually agreed means and class of travel, without additional charge. If the fare and charges for the revised routing are lower than you have paid, the airline shall refund the difference; or
  • Receive a refund.

If your flight is cancelled, you may also be entitled to financial compensation but only if  the cancellation is not attributed to extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather conditions, political instability, strikes, security, risks or unexpected flight safety shortcomings. Seating

Lufthansa offers you the option of choosing seats for yourself and your travelling companions in advance. You can reserve seats directly when booking your flight or later online.

Economy Class passengers can reserve seats in advance on all flights operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional and Austrian Airlines, depending on their chosen fare/booking class. The price varies, however. For a full price breakdown, click here.

In-Flight Refreshments

Snacks and hot and cold beverages are available on all flights. The type of food and beverage service depends on your the ticket class:

  • First Class passengers dine on board as if in a Michelin-starred restaurant, top chefs providing exclusive moments of culinary pleasure.
  • Business Class passengers can enjoy a new range of menus. Depending on the route length and destination, a variety catered highlights await them.
  • Economy Class passengers on all routes can expect an extensive choice of hot and cold beverages, plus a little snack or a hot meal, depending on the route.

Passengers who require special food for dietary, nutritional or religious reasons can be order special meals up to 24 hours before their flight’s departure, provided that there is a confirmed booking in the required class. Ordering special meals via Lufthansa’s My Bookings is easy. There will be no additional costs for the passenger for this service.

In-Flight Entertainment

First-class entertainment is offered on board all Lufthansa long-haul flights. Passengers can choose from current blockbusters and popular classics, as well as a large number of TV series, audio books, CDs and radio stations.
