Located in one of the hottest and most humid parts of the world, Asuncion is well-known for having unbearably warm summers from around December to March. Asuncion is definitely one of the most fascinating destinations in Paraguay. On the surface it stands a typical South American city, littered with monumental pieces of colonial architecture, stretches of urban developments and elegant little plazas with distinctly European influences. But take a closer look and you’ll see this city also has a buzz of energy that comes from the stylish restaurants, chic shopping districts and the overwhelming warmth of the locals.
The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Asunción is the most instantly recognisable buildings in the Asuncion and is an absolute must-visit before heading on to the shopping district. Palma Street is the main commercial area where you can pick up souvenirs for a great price. This region is known for being unbelievably cheap so you’re sure to find a few bargains. If you’re looking for something produced locally, head over to the Plaza de los Heroes for a charming selection of handmade crafts, as well as a great shaded spot for a quick lunch.
The fantastic Museo Del Barro houses a fantastic collection of both modern and indigenous artefacts, so spend the day here before heading to the Jardín Botánico to relax amongst the lush greenery. After sunset there are a few nightclubs and bars, but for something a little more intimate, visit a restaurant downtown to taste some authentic South American cuisine before heading out to see the Palacio de López light up the night sky.
Whilst you can see a lot by exploring Asuncion on foot, you also have the option of using their public transport. Yellow cabs are frequent throughout the city, and can take you anywhere for a pre-agreed fee. Buses are also regular and go pretty much anywhere. If you want to travel beyond Asuncion, perhaps to Estancia, a car rental would be a good option.
Those who fly into the Asuncion Airport (ASU), commonly known as the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, can get a taxi directly into the city. Just remember to agree the cost with your driver before setting off. There is also a bus station located a short walk away from the airport with a service travelling towards the city. If you would prefer, there are also car rental facilities in the airport itself.
