How long is the flight to Suriname?

You can get flights to Zanderij International Airport, the international airport of Paramaribo in Suriname, from London, Edinburgh and Manchester in the United Kingdom. The flight from London takes anywhere from 12h10 to 26h30, depending on stops and layovers. The flight from Edinburgh can take between 12h50 and 24h15 and isalso dependant on stops and layovers. The flight from Manchester can take 17h30 to 33h40, depending on how many stops or layovers. In some cases, you’ll get a better flying time by combining airlines for the shortest route, depending on from which city in the GB you are flying.

Where can you get direct flights to Suriname from?

Zanderij International Airport is the only international airport in Suriname and is located in Paramaribo. Suriname flight deals all include at least one stop. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Suriname from the GB. For cheap flights to Suriname, you can fly from London Heathrow (LHR) via Amsterdam to Paramaribo (PBM). If you’re based further north in England, you can fly from Manchester Airport (MAN) via Amsterdam to Paramaribo on the outbound leg and with two stops at Amsterdam and Dublin (DUB) on the inbound leg. If you are based in Scotland, you can fly from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) via Amsterdam to Paramaribo.

What is the best way to travel around Suriname?

If you are staying along the coast, which is the most developed part of the country, you can get around on local buses, private minibuses or hotel minibuses. As Suriname is a former Dutch colony, there is a strong Dutch influence and bicycling is a popular way to get around Paramaribo. The capital is also very easily navigable on foot. If you decide to explore the jungle interior, you will need to either go via the river on boats that take you upstream or on small bush planes. You can drive around the coastal region but you need an international driver permit. If you go to the interior, the roads become 4WD-accessible only. You can also get taxis around Paramaribo and in the developed coastal areas.

What are some things to do in Suriname?

Paramaribo is the capital of Suriname and has many beautiful, old Dutch buildings, a buzzing nightlife and a great fusion of spicy cuisines from all over the world. Paramaribo also has some interesting religious buildings and you can see a mosque and a synagogue right next door to each other. Outside the capital, you can take a tour or rent a bicycle to explore the old sugar, coffee and cacao plantations along the Commewijne River. Most of Suriname is covered by untouched nature so a trip here is a good way to see all the wildlife and flora. There are various national parks including Galibi Coppename Nature Reserve (where you can see turtle breeding grounds at certain times of the year), Central Suriname Nature Reserve (40% of its wildlife is only found in the Guianas), and Brownsberg Nature Park.

Do I need a passport or visa to fly to Suriname?

You need a valid passport and an e-tourist card if you are a GB citizen. This will allow you to visit Suriname for up to 90 days for tourism purposes only. You just need to apply online, pay the fee and download the tourist card which you will show immigration on arrival. You will need the information from your passport bio-page, your travel itinerary and a 3x4cm digital photo. The current fee is around £29 plus a service fee of about £10. It can take up to 72 hours for the e-tourist card to be processed.
