Flights to Borneo, Malaysia from the United Kingdom range from about 17h-30h. Your precise flight time will depend on your city of departure, as well as the number and length of stopovers. Your flight time will be on the shorter end of the spectrum if you’re travelling from as far south as London, whilst those travelling from Scotland and northern England will likely incur a flight time on the longer end of the range.
Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Borneo from the United Kingdom. The best chance you have at a flight with only one layover is to fly from either London or Manchester airports. When you do experience a layover en route to Borneo from the UK, you’ll likely have them in such common stopover cities as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.
When Borneo is your destination, you’ll alight at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI), which is about 7.8km south of Kota Kinabulu city centre. To reach the city centre from the airport, buy a ticket from the Airport Taxi counter in the arrivals terminal and hand it to a taxi driver at the rank outside the terminal. It will cost you about £6 to arrive at Kota Kinabulu city centre. If your destination is Tawau or Sanfakan in Sabah, or Kuching in Sawak, it will cost you about £12.50 by taxi to these city centres. You can also rent a car from the airport if you prefer to do the driving. There are no public transportation options from the airport, so taking a taxi or hiring a car is usual.
Borneo is Asia’s largest island and part of the Malay Archipelago. It’s northern, Malaysian-owned part of the island is a popular destination for holidaymakers who crave sprawling flora and fauna, thanks to Borneo’s sprawling green spaces and incredible wildlife. Have an incredible experience at the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sabah, where you can walk along with elevated canopies and observe rare birds, wild plants, and the occasional orangutan above the trees. You can possibly see a wild orangutan if you visit Kuching’s Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, a refuge and education centre for Borneo’s endangered orangutans. Take a guided boat tour along the Kinabatangan River in Sabah for a chance to see native Borneo wildlife, like elephants, crocodiles, and Proboscis monkeys in their natural setting. A day trip to Labuan Island just off the coast of Sabah will have you enjoying an afternoon sprinting across warm sandy beaches and luxuriating in the azure sea.
British citizens travelling to Borneo, Malaysia need a passport with six months of validity remaining from the date of their arrival, although a visa is not required for stays under 90 days.
