Peak season:
The peak season does vary depending on where exactly in Zambia you’ll be booking your flight tickets to. Generally the busiest time of the year falls during the dry season. This is typically from May to September or October time although you’ll find cheap flights to Zambia harder to find due to the popularity. You’ll also have the best chance of spotting the animals during a safari as they flock to the waterholes which are full from the wet season. If you visit Lusaka then make time to visit some of their charming markets. Kabwata Cultural village market is on Burma Road and is crammed with traditional wares and tribal crafts. It also exudes a taste of Zambia’s culture so is definitely worth a visit. April can also be a surprisingly busy time of year to visit as the weather is staying drier and festivals begin to start.
Off season:
You’ll certainly find the cheapest flights to Zambia from late November to mid-March as these are the main months of the wet season. December to late February sees the worse of it and it’s not generally advisable to visit during the wet season. That said, if you are on a budget and don’t mind getting wet then you’ll definitely find some deals on your flight tickets, with some flights to Zambia close to £500 cheaper in January than in June and July. March and November are typically classed as off-season although they are the pre-wet season months of the year. There are quite a few major airlines that offer cheap flights to Zambia. The most popular of which are British Airways and South African. Kenya Airways, KLM, Air France and Etihad are also possibilities to consider. When you’re looking into flights to Zambia, the airlines available will depend on where exactly you are hoping to visit. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a particular area you can compare to see which airline offers you the best value for money on your flight tickets. British Airways is a reputable airline that also provides complimentary snacks and drinks onboard their flights to Zambia, although you will pay slightly more for your flight tickets. Etihad is also a great, luxury airline to consider. Ultimately it’ll boil down to your budget and then your preference. The Lusaka International Airport (Kenneth Kaunda International Airport) is around 16km away from the city centre. Getting there isn’t too difficult although there isn’t a great deal of options available. The only real choice you have is to jump in a taxi from outside of the airport. While they aren’t exactly dangerous, you’re better off avoiding this option if you’re arriving late at night or travelling alone. You could however decide to rent a car for the duration of your trip, and the road between Lusaka and Livingstone is perfect for driving on. If you decide to rent a car make sure you arrange this in advance when you are booking your flight tickets.
It’s a similar story with Livingstone airport; you are limited with your transport options although the distance is relatively short between the airport and the city. Once you have booked your flights to Zambia and are looking into your accommodation, check to see which ones provide shuttle buses to and from the airport. A lot of the bigger hotels to provide this service and it’ll make your journey easier. Failing that the only choice you have is to take a taxi. Again the distance isn’t far so you won’t pay a fortune but it’s not advisable to get a taxi late at night, especially if you are alone.
