Travel time from the UK to Rwanda varies depending on the airline you choose and the number of stopovers on your flight. The average trip time with a single stopover is almost 11h. Other factors that will impact your experience include the airport you depart from and the one you land at. Most flights to Rwanda from the UK originate in London, with London Heathrow being the most common departure point. London City Airport and London Gatwick Airport also offer flights to Rwanda. There are several airports in Rwanda, but Kigali Airport and Kamembe Airport are the two most commonly used.
Unfortunately, there are currently no direct flights to Rwanda from the UK. However, multiple cities offer flights from the UK to Rwanda with one or two stopovers. For instance, you can choose to fly out of London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, or Glasgow. Depending on your needs, you can choose Kamembe or Kigali for your destination, or you can opt for Goma, Kihihi, or Buakvu. Note that travel time with a single stopover can take up to 11h, but two stopovers may increase that to 14h or more. The most common stopover points include Brussels, Paris, Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, Entebbe, and Nairobi.
Taking a taxi is often the best way to get around while in Rwanda, particularly in Kigali, although you will find them in all cities. Buses and minibuses are also available and are largely efficient and affordable. Car hire is available as well, but not widely so, and you’ll need to book within an urban area. Note that if you intend to go to a national park, you’ll want one with four-wheel drive. Motorcycle rental is also available.
While much of Rwanda remains wilderness, there are ample things to see and do during a stay. The Volcanoes National Park is stunning, for instance. Nyamata church and the Kigali Genocide Memorial are also popular. Akagera National Park is a major draw for visitors, and many tourists like to visit the Kimironko Market. Other options include the National Museum of Rwanda, Virunga National Park, Nyungwe National Park, and Lake Kivu.
Yes, a passport is necessary to enter Rwanda from the UK. You’ll need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months after your date of entry and that you have a blank page. You will also need a visa to enter the country. You can purchase a 30-day tourist visa for around £30 or so. If you intend to remain in the country for a longer period, you’ll need to purchase a longer-term visa (non-tourist).
