Car Hire FAQs

What are the requirements to hire a car in Thailand?

In order to use car hires in Thailand, you will need to present the Thailand car hire company with your passport and a valid driving licence. They will also expect you to show them an International Driving License, especially if your original licence is not accompanied by an official translation. Most companies that provide car hires in Thailand require you to pay with a credit card to cover the deposit, and you will need to be at least 21 years old to use rental cars in Thailand. Some companies may only accept drivers that are 23 years old, and you can expect to pay an additional daily fee if you are under 26 years old.

What are the rules for driving in Thailand?

When driving car hires in Thailand, you will need to obey the local laws and we recommend that you contact each city’s department for motor vehicles to keep up to speed with any recent law changes that may have come into effect. Cars drive on the left-hand side of the road in Thailand, and they generally overtake on the right, although sometimes you may see it happen on the right as well. If you have held your driving licence for less than five years, then the blood alcohol limit is 20mg per 100 ml of blood. If you have had your license for longer then it rises to 50mg per 100ml of blood. While seatbelts only have to be worn while seated in the front, we recommend that you wear it while seated in the back if the car is fitted with them. You are not allowed to use your mobile phone while driving unless using hands free. Children under 12 cannot sit in the front of the car.

What type of car is recommended for driving in Thailand?

You will be able to find some great offers for cheap car hire in Thailand, and what type of car you want to use will depend on what you plan on doing. If you would like to stay within the city, then we recommend using a compact car or an economy car as they will help you save money and are easier to control, park and manage. If you would like to explore areas outside the city, or travel between cities then consider taking an SUV or 4X4, as the roads can vary a lot, and you may encounter potholes and washouts from the monsoon season. They will also provide more luggage space if you are travelling with a group of friends. Animals cross the road frequently and pedestrians walk along the edge of the road as there are not always pavements. We recommend getting a car with air conditioning as the heat and humidity can get quite strong.
